Yellow Flower Cafe

Breakfast at Yellow Flower Cafe Ubud

This great cafe is situated on a high ridge near Penestanan in Ubud. The scenic walk down the narrow lane takes you past small shrines, rice fields and endless palm trees, making you feel relaxed before you even get there. There are two comfortable seating areas and a dining area out the front. You can choose to sit on hanging chairs, bean bags on the floor or rustic, wooden chairs. This is a great space to bring your laptop, enjoy working in the peaceful surroundings on the free wifi and taste some of the best food in Ubud.

Yellow Flower Cafe is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and we tried all 3. It’s owned and run by a Balinese family and they have a great menu that uses organic, local ingredients and fresh produce. For breakfast you’ll find a choice of smoothie bowls, pancakes, eggs any way you want, avocado and feta toast or a traditional Balinese breakfast with a range of delicious coffee, tea or health drinks. The lunch and dinner menu is also great with Balinese favorites like Nasi Goreng and Nasi Campur, salads, soups and pasta. There are also small appetisers available and we recommend trying the Balinese tapas for two so you can try a mix of a few of the different appetisers.

Every Sunday from 5:00 pm there is also a Balinese buffet which was a delicious way to try a mix of the different, traditional dishes and flavours. The friendly staff can help to tell you what the different dishes are and there are options for both vegetarians and meat-eaters. Juice and fruit at Watercress

This a popular foodie spot in Ubud and it was busy every time we went past so we had to see what all the fuss was about!

We decided to go for breakfast and were not disappointed. You can choose from Eggs Benedict, Smoothie Bowls, Smashed Avocado, Quinoa Brekky Bowl or Chia Pudding to name a few. We chose the set breakfast menu with a choice of any breakfast item, fruit salad, fruit juice and tea or coffee. Liap Liap

Steak at Liap Liap Ubud

Liap Liap is definitely more on the pricey side for Ubud and compares to western prices, but it’s well worth the money if you’re looking for some incredible food in Ubud.

It’s a modern grill restaurant, serving up mainly meat and seafood dishes. There are still a couple of vegetarian options, but if we’re honest if you’re vegetarian you’d be better checking out one of many other restaurants in Ubud like Zest mentioned below. For meat and seafood eaters it probably doesn’t get much better than Liap Liap in Ubud. There is a huge choice and the portions served were perfect – we left feeling very satisfied.

Lamb Skewers Liap Liap

This restaurant is only open for lunch and dinner and has the same extensive menu all day. There are also a couple of set menus and offers that are only available for lunch. You’ll find duck, chicken or sting ray grilled in a bamboo shell, grilled satay, pink snapper, lobster, crab, rib-eye steak and many other options. There is also an extensive drinks menu with beers, cocktails and separate wine list.

We had been craving a great steak and Liap Liap really delivered. We both had the Lamb Satay skewers to start, which were tender, delicious and served with a miso and soy sauce. For our main we went for the Black Angus Rib Eye Steak served with huge potato wedges and sambal. We asked for it medium rare and it was cooked to perfection. Juicy, tender and well-seasoned. We dined there for breakfast and it was a relaxing and peaceful way to start the day. Mesari Warung

We were lucky enough to be staying opposite this popular, local warung that also has a takeaway service. They open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, use local ingredients, cook to order and are situated along one of the quiet back-streets of Penestanan next to a rice field. If you’re looking for a tasty meal in a relaxing setting that offers excellent value then Mesari Warung is a great choice.

The menu is surprisingly extensive with local favorites like Nasi Goreng and Nasi Campur, Mexican burritos and tacos and also pasta, burgers and pizzas.

We tried a few different items from the menu and all were really tasty. We especially enjoyed the pizzas, with generous toppings, a great base and a variety of options to choose from. The Nasi Goreng was also the best we tried while in Bali and we tried this dish a lot at various places around the island! When ordering the chicken option it came with chicken satay and peanut sauce, chicken nuggets, a fried egg, tasty rice and a leaf fried in batter.

Don’t miss the delicious cakes on the stand as you walk into the restaurant. These aren’t shown on the main menu, but if you fancy a desert be sure to check out what they have on display. If they have the Coconut Pie then you must try it – one of the best cakes we’ve ever tried.
