We think Christmas is the best time to visit New York. Why? Because it’s when the city is at its most magical and there’s undoubtedly a festive buzz in the air. We’re also pretty sure most of those big movies you’ve seen were shot when New York was a glow in all its festive wonder! Snow and yellow taxis in New York at ChristmasIf you’re willing to be in New York on Christmas Day you can grab a bargain hotel rate as the prices drop dramatically from the 23rd to 27th of December. On top of this Christmas Day morning is probably the only time you could take a crowd free picture next to one of the city’s famous landmarks.

It doesn’t matter where you are in New York at Christmas, the seasonal yuletide and festive magic can be experienced all throughout this famous city!

The echos of choirs can be heard around the city, there’s festively decorated horse carriages passing through Central Park, and lone musicians playing a plethora of holiday classics on their instruments. The festive cheer can be seen on every street corner, there’s giant Christmas decks, baubles and lights, elaborately decorated shop fronts, as well as festive wreaths projecting from the many windows and archways. Christmas Activities In New York

Rockefeller CentreRockerfeller Centre Christmas Tree New York

On obvious choice, but an absolute must-do is visiting the Rockefeller Centre Christmas Tree. It can get a little crowded, but it’s a great way to get into the festive spirit. You can soak up the atmosphere while watching people skating on the ice rink, just below the huge, elaborately decorated Christmas tree.

This official Christmas Tree tradition started when the Rockefeller Centre opened in 1933 and it quickly became the centre of festive cheer around the city. An ice rink was opened a few years later in 1936 and to this day the tradition has continued. In the past many of the trees were donated to the Rockefeller Centre, but today the tree is scouted by the head gardener at the Rockefeller Centre. The tree is typically a Norway spruce that stands anywhere between 70 to 100 feet tall and is decorated with no less than 50,000 LED lights. In 2004 a 9.5 foot wide Swarovski Star was placed on the tree for the first time, the star features 25,000 crystals and one million facets — wow!

The tree lighting ceremony is usually around the end of November and it stays lit and on display until the 7th of January. The tree is illuminated daily from 5:30 am till midnight, with the exception of Christmas Day where it stays lit for 24 hours.

If you want to feel as though you’ve stepped directly into a New York Christmas movie then seeing the Rockefeller Christmas Tree is one of the best things to do in New York at Christmas.

To make the kids day visit Santa on the eighth floor of Macy’s Herald Square. You’ll find decorated Christmas trees, reindeer, sparkling lights and singing snowmen which means the wait in line to see the man himself will get the kids even more excited to see him!

The kids will get the full Santa experience once they’ve made their way to the front – they can sit on his lap, tell him how good they’ve been this year and all about what Christmas gifts are on their wish list! A professional photographer is on hand to get the perfect shot to purchase or you can snap away yourself to get some treasured photos of this magical Christmas moment.

It’s free to visit, but reservations must be booked in advance online or over the phone as this is the only way to get a spot in line. Macy’s Santaland opens in late November through to Christmas Eve and you can book a reservation for anytime during regular store hours.

This public park is in Greenwich Village and it’s a great place to stroll through when you’re in the area. When we went there was a guy playing a Christmas tune brilliantly on his saxophone, which only added to the atmosphere.

Grand Central Terminal Holiday FairGrand Central New York at Christmas

It may sound a little crazy visiting a holiday market at a train station, but this is no ordinary station. Grand Central itself is an architectural marvel with a pretty interesting history, not to mention nearly being flattened and turned into an office block. The station really is a special place and a great setting for this market, there’s vendors selling a range of unique items including spices, cheeses, glassware, artwork and winter clothing, to name a few. As well as the market there’s some places in Grand Central to grab a drink (maybe a cocktail or two) and watch the hustle and bustle pass you by.

The market opens in mid-November and runs until Christmas Eve. Open on weekdays 10:00 am till 8:00 pm, Saturday 10:00 am till 7:00 pm and Sunday 11:00 am till 6:00 pm (Christmas Eve hours 10:00 am till 6:00 pm).

Holiday Window Displays

Macy’s started the Christmas window tradition in the early 1980’s and since then all of the major stores have unveiled bigger and better displays each year. We suggest trying to see the windows as early as possible as they are must-do on most people’s agenda’s, plus there will be plenty of Christmas shoppers filling the streets too, so it does get very busy!

Tiffany's 5th Ave New York Christmas

5th Avenue is a major shopping street in New York so most of the big name department stores and brands are located near here. As if the windows aren’t festive enough many of the stores are also decorated in elaborate lights and decorations. Make sure you head back here one evening too to see the Cartier store wrapped in a huge, red bow with Christmas trees in every window, Bvlgari with a lit-up version of their iconic necklace draped around it and the iconic, giant snowflake hanging seemingly in mid-air above the luxury shopping street below.Snowflake on 5th Ave New York Christmas Decoration

Bvlgari Christmas Decorations New York 5th Ave

Every year the holiday windows are different for each store, but you won’t be disappointed by visiting each of these must-see shop fronts. If you start at Bloomingdale’s you can work your way down to Macy’s, which is a little further away than the others, but worth it! The whole route is 1.9 miles (3 km) and if you’re anything like us you’ll do a lot more walking than that in NYC!

  • Bloomingdale’s – 1000 Third Ave, 59th Street and Lexington Ave
  • Barney’s – 575 5th Ave
  • Bergdorf Goodman – 754 5th Ave

Tip: Be sure to head to Saks Fifth Avenue after dark to watch their fantastic 10-story-tall theatrical light show. The show, which is complete with festive music runs every 10 minutes from 5:00 pm till 11:00 pm everyday.

We would have included the rink at the Rockefeller Centre but it’s a little pricey and gets very crowded. It’s still a cool place to watch other people skate and enjoy the Christmas vibes though. If you want to skate at Rockefeller Centre over the Christmas period it costs $32 per adult and $15 for children under 11. Skate rental is a further $12.

Bryant Park Ice Rink

The best thing about Bryant Park Ice Rink is that it’s totally free! Because of this it does get busy, so to avoid the crowds, especially around Christmas we advise to get there early to skate. The ice rink is located opposite the New York Public Library and is surrounded by the Bryant Park Winter Village during the festive period. It’s a great way to start a festive day, with some skating followed by some eggnog and fresh gingerbread at the Winter Village.

They provide skate rental for $20 as well as skate aids for $22 an hour (for beginners under 10). The lockers are also free but remember to bring your own lock otherwise it will cost an extra $10 for a lock.

It is open from 8:00 am till 10:00 pm everyday, although it may occasionally be closed for events so check the Bryant Park website for more details.

It must be a rare site.

  8. For me to really get into the Christmas spirit it has to be cold and snowy so that even when I go outside to see the beautiful Christmas decorations or to go ice skating I just feel the need to go inside a nice cozy cafe to have some hot drink and some Christmas inspired dessert.
All the activities in New York during Christmas sound lovely, and it really is a magical time to be there. I hope I will make it someday and I hope that when I visit it will snow a little bit.

Hi Carol, it’s definitely the most magical place we have been to at Christmas! Fortunately we were really lucky with the weather as it was 18 degrees celsius around Christmas that year! Now that we have been there at Christmas we would definitely head back there even if was cold as it is such a fantastic place that time of year.

We love white Christmas and NY does sound like a perfect city to experience it with all the festive decorations, street musicians, Christmas trees (Rockefeller Centre Christmas Tree is definitely on the list) and the vibrant Christmas markets. We are sure kiddo is going to enjoy the Macy’s elaborate Santaland.

  24. I love NYC at Christmas!! Yeah, it’s super crowded, but definitely worth doing. I think ice skating at Rockefeller Center is overrated because there’s just so many people. But the Rockettes’ show at Radio City is amazing!!!

  25. It’s strange, there’s so many familiar sites in this, places that I’ve seen in the movies but never put a name to them. And it looks and sounds so festive too. I’ve only visited New York once, but next time I hope to do so at Christmas. The illuminations, the cakes, the markets, and so much more that I’m sure helps to warm up the winter.

  33. WOW! What a packed itinerary you guys had. I didn’t know about the Botanical garden and also the Macy’s display. We went to look at the 5th Ave window display yesterday, but I was a little bit underwhelmed. I think a lot of them were static and didn’t showcase the businesses very well. Beautiful photos of your travels.
