Osprey Farpoint 40L Backpack Review

Osprey Farpoint 40L Backpack

We are long-term travelers and actually have two of these backpacks, one for each of us, as well as a third bag (the Osprey Sojourn 80L) which is our checked baggage. We use the two backpacks primarily to carry our electrical equipment and a spare set of clothes when we’re flying as they are our main carry-on luggage. We do also use these bags when we have a base and are going on hikes or excursions for days, sometimes longer, and they are perfect for us in both circumstances.

The Osprey Farpoint 40 litre backpacks are available to buy in three different colours – Volcanic Grey, Jasper Red and Caribbean Blue.

The bags are available in four different sizes however it’s worth noting that only the 40 Litre pack meets the hand luggage requirements when flying. There is also a 40, 55, 70 and 80 litre version of this pack.

Size & Weight Of Osprey Farpoint 40L

The weight of the backpack alone is around 1.44 kg which leaves around 5.5 kg – 8.5 kg of packable weight, depending on which airline you’re flying with.

There is both a S/M and M/L available, which will determine where the hip strap will fit you. The S/M is still called Osprey Farpoint 40L, but it’s slightly smaller in capacity at 38L. Sarah is 5 ft 7 and has the S/M, Andy is 6 ft 5 and has the M/L and this suited us great. We barely noticed a difference in the size, but where the hip strap is does make a difference, so ensure you get the one that will be most comfortable for you when walking with a heavy backpack.

Dimensions

  • Length is 21 inches (54 cm)
  • Width is 14 inches (35 cm)
  • Depth is 9 inches (23D)

Main Features Of Osprey Farpoint 40L

  • High quality material
  • Top Handle
  • Side Handle
  • Shoulder Strap
  • Concealable back and hip straps
  • Numerous pockets and compartments
  • Laptop compartment
  • Compression Straps (both external and internal)
  • Two external mesh pockets

The main material used to make the Osprey Farpoint 40L is called 210D nylon mini hex rip stop, this makes the bag strong lightweight and durable. It also means that if you do get any scuffs or holes on the backpack they generally won’t tear or create rips. If that’s not enough you get the almighty guarantee from Osprey, which is a warranty of sorts that covers the bag for any defects, or from damage and unusual wear and tear resulting from the way the bag has been built.Wearing Osprey Farpoint 40L backpack with hip strap

The bag isn’t completely waterproof but is still very water resistant, so if you’re using the bag for long hiking trips or extended periods of outdoor use we recommend buying a rain cover. The cover will encase the pack entirely protecting the contents from any heavy downpours especially handy if you’re carrying a laptop or any other electrical equipment within the backpack.

The main compartment of the Osprey Farpoint 40L is a clam-shell design which means it’s large and opens nearly all the way around and gives easy access for all stowed items. Inside Osprey Farpoint 40L backpackThe front compartment is excellent for separating items and includes a mesh pocket and a laptop pouch.Laptop pouch in Osprey 40L Farpoint

The laptop compartment is great for a 15 inch laptop or smaller and offers some extra padding but we would still recommend a laptop cover also for added protection.

There is also a top compartment which is useful for storing quick access and small items such as keys, passports or snacks.Top compartment of the backpack

The backpack straps, harness and hip-belt are cushioned and very comfortable, they also zip away into their very own compartment at the back of the pack.Foldable straps of the backpack

Back of the Osprey Farpoint 40L backpackThe side and top handles are both padded and feature a comfortable mesh type material which is also easy to grip. The two external pockets are ideal for carrying water bottles or even a tripod or something larger with the aid of the compression straps.Carrying the Osprey backpack with side handle

We’ve used the Osprey Farpoint 40L backpacks quite a bit over the recent months travelling over seas and on hiking trips and they are excellent. We are more than happy with our decision for these bags for long-term travel. They will save hundreds of pounds in airport fees due to it being a perfect carry on bag as it meets the requirements for nearly all airlines.

The zippers are very strong and sturdy and the zips are chunky with a metal hole in them to allow for padlocks and extra security.Zipper on the Osprey backpack

The bag also features internal compression straps which are handy for securing loose items within the pack and help to keep the bulk of the pack to a minimum.Internal compression straps

There is also added protection and security from the external compression straps which make it impossible to access the zippers to the main compartment without then undoing the strap again.

Overall we think this bag is perfect for long-term travelers as a carry-on, solo travelers who don’t need to carry too much or for general hiking and adventuring. The build quality is of the highest standard and so far we have encountered no problems with the bag, even after trekking in the Himalayas so we’re extremely happy with our purchase.

  1. Loving my Osprey Farpoint 40. Except for the pockets in the front. They are too small to put inside a water bottle, when the bag is fully packed…
